Dr Holms Hotel

Dr Holms is the village's grand historic hotel — a low timber-and-stone building immediately opposite the station, with a wide veranda, traditional dragon-styled gable carvings, and a famous afternoon-tea tradition. Even if you are not staying, the public areas (lobby, library, the heated outdoor pool with mountain views) are open to visitors who drop in for a coffee.

The hotel is a piece of Norwegian tourism history and a useful reference point in the village: most things are described in relation to "across from Dr Holms." It also runs a serious wellness facility and an ambitious dinner menu using regional produce. Worth a visit even if you are not booking a room.

A story
Built in 1909 by the physician Ingebrigt Christian Lund Holm immediately after the Bergen Railway opened, Dr Holms was one of the first purpose-built mountain hotels in Norway and helped establish Geilo as a tourist destination. The original wing has been carefully preserved through several expansions and remains in use as a hotel today.
