Geilo Station and the Bergen Railway

Geilo Station sits at the centre of the village and is one of the most pleasant stops on what is widely considered Europe's most scenic mainline rail journey. The station building is a low wooden structure in the standard Norwegian railway style, and several express trains a day in each direction connect Geilo to Oslo (about 3 1/2 hours) and Bergen (about 4 hours).

For passengers, the most spectacular stretch is between Geilo and Voss — over the high plateau at Finse, past the Hardangerjøkulen glacier, and down to the western fjord landscape. The line is sometimes called the "Roof of Norway" and the trip is worth doing one-way as a day excursion from Geilo. Booking ahead is advisable in summer and during ski season.

A story
When it opened in 1909, the Bergen Railway was the highest mainline railway in northern Europe — climbing to 1,237 metres at Finse, crossing the Hardangervidda plateau, and connecting Oslo to Bergen in a single dramatic ride. The construction took 30 years and required some of the boldest engineering of the late 19th century, including over 180 tunnels.
