Getting There

Værøy is served by two ferry routes, both operated by Torghatten Nord. The main connection runs from Bodø on the mainland, taking around four hours and calling at Røst before reaching Sørland harbor — long enough to feel like a genuine voyage, but the scenery makes it worth it. If you're already somewhere in Lofoten, the shorter option is the crossing from Moskenes, about 1.5 to 2 hours. This route passes directly over the Moskstraumen tidal current, which is reason enough to take it; on a choppy day the ferry pitches and rolls in a way that makes the legends about this stretch of water feel entirely believable.

A helicopter service also connects Bodø with the heliport near Sørland, cutting travel time dramatically — useful if you're pressed for time or the ferries are cancelled in bad weather, but expensive by any standard. Most visitors arrive by sea, which is the right way to arrive at an island that has spent centuries living by it.
