Hessdalen Valley

Remote valley known for unexplained lights and a stark central Norwegian landscape

Hessdalen Valley is a sparsely settled valley southwest of Roros, best known for the strange lights that have been reported here for decades. The phenomenon has attracted researchers, photographers, sceptics, and UFO enthusiasts, which gives the place an unusual reputation for somewhere so quiet.

Even without a sighting, the drive has appeal if you like lonely Norwegian landscapes: farms, forested slopes, open sky, and a sense of being well away from the museum polish of Roros. Go with curiosity rather than expectation, and do not count on the lights performing on schedule.
