Huset

Huset sits on the rise between Nybyen and central Longyearbyen and serves as the cultural living room of the whole archipelago. The complex contains a casual cafe, a more formal restaurant, a pub, a cinema, and a small concert hall.

The fine-dining menu leans into Arctic ingredients — reindeer, seal, Arctic char — and the wine list is famous, courtesy of a deep cellar dug into the permafrost. The cinema and pub are where Longyearbyen and the UNIS students go on a Saturday night. Reservations essential for dinner.

A story
Huset means simply 'the house'. It opened in 1951 as a combined cinema, meeting hall, and library for the mining community and is still the only cinema on Svalbard. Its wine cellar holds over 20,000 bottles — at one point it was rated one of the largest in Europe.
