The slopes around Nybyen still carry the wood-and-steel skeletons of the old aerial coal trams — wooden cableway towers, ore buckets, and pieces of mine machinery left in place when the operations closed. They have been preserved as cultural heritage and are unusually photogenic against the bare valley walls.
A short walk from the settlement leads to several of the closest installations. Do not climb on them: the wood is rotten and the structures are protected. The Svalbard Museum in Longyearbyen has the full context.
