Galleri Svalbard

Galleri Svalbard sits just above Nybyen in a low timber building. It is a small but well-curated space dedicated to art and historical material from the High Arctic. The permanent collection centres on the work of the Norwegian painter Kåre Tveter, whose almost-abstract Svalbard landscapes capture the polar light better than any photograph.

Changing exhibitions cover photography, expedition memorabilia, and contemporary Arctic art. The shop is one of the best places to pick up serious prints, books, and maps of the archipelago. Worth an hour, especially on a stormy day.
