Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen)

Striking 1965 church with glacier-inspired aluminium panels and Europe's largest stained-glass window

Tromsø's most distinctive landmark sits across the bridge from the city centre in Tromsdalen. Designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig and completed in 1965, its eleven aluminium-clad triangular roof panels are meant to evoke glacier formations. The enormous stained-glass window on the east wall is one of the largest in Europe. The organ has 2,940 pipes, some as tall as ten metres. Admission is charged; organ concerts are held in summer.
