Things to Do

The Arctic Cathedral across the Tromsø Bridge is the city's most photographed building — its triangular aluminium facade and enormous stained-glass window are unlike anything else in Norway. The Fjellheisen Cable Car ascends 420 metres to the summit of Storsteinen in five minutes; from the top, the city, its surrounding islands, and the fjords spread out in every direction.

For museums: the Tromsø Museum is the northernmost university museum in the world, strongest on Sami culture and Arctic natural history. The Polar Museum covers Arctic hunting and exploration in an 1837 blubber warehouse on the waterfront. Polaria has the world's northernmost aquarium and a bearded seal pool with underwater viewing. The Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum is the main art institution for northern Norway, with free permanent-collection access. The Perspektivet Museum focuses on cultural history and documentary photography.

Tromsø Cathedral is Norway's only wooden cathedral, built in 1861. The Arctic-Alpine Botanical Garden at Breivika is the world's northernmost, and is free and at its best in July.
