The Fjellheisen cable car has been lifting visitors 420 metres up to the summit of Storsteinen since 1961. The base station sits near the Tromsø Bridge in Tromsdalen, a short bus ride or a 30-minute walk from the city centre. The ascent takes five minutes; from the top, the city, its surrounding islands, and the fjords spread out in every direction. The mountain station has a cafe. In summer the cable car runs past midnight for Midnight Sun viewing; in winter it operates on reduced hours.
