Statues of Bolek, Lolek and Reksio

Small bronze statues honouring beloved animated characters made in Bielsko

Scattered along the route between the train station and the old town are three small bronze statues honouring Bielsko's most famous cultural export: the cartoon brothers Bolek and Lolek, and the friendly dog Reksio. Each was made by local sculptor Bronisław Krzysztof and installed in 2011.

The statues are easy to miss — they sit at ground level, life-sized and unfussy — but they're a nice cue to Bielsko's other identity as a centre of Polish animation. The Studio Filmów Rysunkowych nearby has occasional open days and a small archive; even if you don't visit it, the statues make a small, friendly trail through the modern city centre.

A story
Bolek and Lolek and the dog Reksio were created at Bielsko's Studio Filmów Rysunkowych, the Polish animation studio that produced cartoons watched by generations across the Eastern Bloc. The characters were exported to over eighty countries — the studio still operates in town, and these statues are a quiet civic thank-you.
