Boleslawiec Rail Viaduct

The Boleslawiec rail viaduct carries the railway over the Bóbr River at the northern edge of the old town — a handsome multi-arch stone bridge that is both a working railway structure and one of the town's most photographed landmarks. It can be seen from the riverside path below, which makes for a pleasant short walk from the market square.

The view from the bank of the Bóbr, looking up at the stone arches, is particularly good in the afternoon light. The river here is clean and attractive, with a park on the western bank that provides a peaceful place to sit in the shade.

A story
The viaduct was built in 1845 and is one of the oldest railway bridges in Poland still in active use. When it was constructed, it was an engineering showpiece — the Bóbr River was a significant obstacle to the Silesian railway network, and spanning it required a multi-arch stone structure that took several years to complete.
