Three Crosses Hill (Góra Trzech Krzyży)

A short walk west from the market square takes you up Three Crosses Hill, the second viewpoint above the town. The crosses on top are not historic in themselves but stand on the same spot as a series that go back to the early eighteenth century, marking the town's worst plague.

The view from the top is the classic Kazimierz panorama — castle on one hill, parish church spire just below, river bending behind the merchant houses. Better at sunset than the castle hill, because the light hits the town from the right direction. Steep path, ten minutes from the square.

A story
The three wooden crosses on the hill commemorate a cholera epidemic that killed a large part of the town's population in 1708. According to local tradition the crosses are renewed each generation and replaced exactly where the originals stood, which is why despite the wooden construction they have looked much the same for three centuries.
