The Amber Museum within Malbork Castle is one of the best collections of amber craftsmanship in Poland. Amber was the Teutonic Knights' most valuable commodity — they held a monopoly on Baltic amber production and trade for over a century, and the proceeds funded the castle's construction and expansion. The collection covers amber objects from the medieval period through to the twentieth century, including ecclesiastical pieces, jewellery, carved figurines, and works of astonishing intricacy.
Among the highlights are pieces of amber with prehistoric insects trapped inside, a phenomenon that Baltic amber uniquely preserves due to its chemical composition. The collection also includes examples of "amber rooms" and decorative inlays, tracing how Baltic amber shaped the luxury arts of northern Europe. If you are visiting the castle, the amber museum is part of the standard ticket and not to be missed.
