Kayaking the Masurian Lakes

The Masurian Lake District is one of the best kayaking regions in central Europe, and Mragowo sits within comfortable reach of several marked water trails. The Great Masurian Kayak Trail (Wielka Pętla Mazurska) is the flagship route: a 108-kilometre circuit through 18 lakes connected by rivers and canals, typically done over five to seven days but easily broken into single-day sections. The trail passes through pine and birch forests, small villages, and stretches of open water where the only sounds are wind and water birds.

Kayaks and canoes can be hired in Mragowo and from outfitters in Mikołajki and Ruciane-Nida. Day trips along the Krutynia River — one of Poland's most scenic kayak routes, running through a National Landscape Park south of Mragowo — are particularly popular: the river is gentle enough for beginners, the banks are undeveloped, and kingfishers and osprey are regularly seen along the way. The season runs from May to October; July and August are the busiest months, with some stretches of river feeling like a convoy. June and September offer the same landscapes with far fewer paddlers.
