Piknik Country Festival

Piknik Country is one of Europe's largest country and western music festivals, held in Mragowo every August since 1983. The combination of American country music and a small Polish town beside a lake is stranger and more successful than it sounds: the festival draws tens of thousands of visitors over several days, filling the town with people in cowboy hats and boots who have come from across Poland and from country music scenes in Germany, the Czech Republic, and beyond. Polish country music has its own tradition — the country sound arrived via US military radio and stuck in unexpected places — and Piknik Country is its annual gathering.

The festival takes place on a large outdoor site near the lake, with multiple stages running simultaneously from afternoon into the night. International acts appear alongside Polish country performers; the lineup ranges from authentic American headliners to Polish bands playing their own interpretation of the genre. The town's population roughly doubles during festival week, accommodation books months in advance, and the lake becomes a backdrop for the kind of weekend where people camp in fields and stay up until dawn. Outside of festival week Mragowo is a quiet summer resort; during it, it becomes briefly extraordinary.
