The old town is small and entirely walkable. Olsztyn is unusual in Poland for having a working tram network — three lines reopened in 2015 after the 1960s system was abandoned — which is useful for reaching the lake and the university campus south of the centre. Buses cover the rest of the city, and rented bikes are a fine way to reach Lake Ukiel and the surrounding forest trails.
