Old Town Square (Rynek)

Rebuilt market square ringed by colourful gabled townhouses

Olsztyn's Rynek is small, square, and pretty in the way that rebuilt Polish old towns tend to be. The pastel-coloured townhouses on all four sides date from the postwar restoration — the original square was around eighty per cent destroyed in 1945 — but follow the gabled merchant-town forms of the surviving older neighbours.

The Old Town Hall at the centre houses the municipal library and the city archives. Cafe terraces fill the square in summer, and street musicians make a regular appearance.
