The Sandomierz Royal Castle occupies the southern tip of the Old Town ridge, overlooking the Vistula valley below. The original castle was built for Casimir the Great in the 14th century; what survives today is the Renaissance east wing, largely intact since the 16th century. The Swedish invaders of the 1650s demolished most of the complex during the wars that nearly ended the Polish state.
The castle now houses a regional museum with exhibits on the castle's history, medieval archaeology, and the surrounding region. The interior is worth seeing — the Gothic cellars below and the Renaissance rooms above give a strong sense of how imposing the original complex was. The terrace outside has one of the best views in Sandomierz: the Vistula winding below and the loess bluffs across the valley.
