Sandomierz's compact Old Town is best explored on foot. Start at the market square, where the 14th-century town hall anchors a ring of Renaissance townhouses. From there, the main sights radiate within easy walking distance: the castle to the south, the cathedral below it, the Opatów Gate to the north. The underground tourist route below the market square is a highlight not to miss.
The surrounding loess hills have quietly become one of Poland's most interesting wine regions. Several vineyards within easy reach of the town offer tastings, particularly in summer and autumn.
