Wieliczka's market square is a pleasant surprise for visitors who have spent the morning underground. It is a proper small Polish town centre — cobbled, surrounded by modest townhouses, with a Gothic church at one corner — and almost entirely free of the tourist crowds that queue at the mine entrance nearby.
The Church of Saint Clement (14th century) on the square is worth a look inside: it has a carved wooden altar and stalls with salt-miners' emblems, a reminder that this was a working town defined by an underground industry. The cafes on the square are good for lunch after the mine tour, cheaper and more local than the facilities at the mine entrance.
