When to Go

Zakopane has two distinct high seasons. December to March is the skiing season — the slopes on Kasprowy Wierch and Gubałówka have reliable snow, the Ski Jumping World Cup in January brings crowds and atmosphere, and the town has an energetic, boozy aprés-ski character. Book accommodation well in advance for New Year and the January peak.

June to September is the summer hiking season. Trails are well-marked and maintained, the cable car runs to Kasprowy Wierch, and the route to Morskie Oko is busy but beautiful. July and August are the most crowded months, with Kraków day-trippers filling the town on weekends. June and September offer the best compromise of reliable weather and manageable crowds. The High Tatras can see severe afternoon thunderstorms in summer — start hikes early and descend from exposed ridges before noon.

April to May and October to November are the shoulder seasons — quieter, cheaper, and unpredictable. Snow is possible in both periods on the higher trails. The Tatry National Park keeps most routes open year-round, but avalanche risk closes some paths in early spring.

The International Highland Folklore Festival in late August brings folk music, dance, and costume from highland communities across the Carpathians. It is one of the better folk music events in Poland and worth timing a visit around if the dates work.
