Eating Out

Monte Gordo's restaurant scene is built around fresh fish and the cataplana — a copper clam-shaped cooking vessel unique to the Algarve, used to steam shellfish, fish, and chouriço together with tomatoes and wine. The best cataplana in Monte Gordo comes from the restaurants on the promenade and the streets just behind it, where competition keeps standards up. Order for two or more people: the portions are generous and the vessel takes time to cook.

The promenade restaurants cater to a mix of Portuguese and Spanish visitors, which means prices are reasonable and the menus are more focused than in tourist-heavy resorts further west. Look for percebes (barnacles), amêijoas (clams), and grilled dourado (gilt-head bream) alongside the cataplana. Most restaurants are seasonal and may close or reduce hours outside June to September.
