Praia da Bordeira

Vast windswept beach near Carrapateira backed by dunes and a tidal river

Bordeira is the biggest beach in the Aljezur municipality — about a kilometre of sand backed by dunes and bordered at its northern end by the mouth of the Ribeira da Bordeira, which forms a shallow tidal lagoon perfect for children. The beach is about 15 km south of Aljezur town, near the village of Carrapateira, and because it requires a bit of effort to get to it stays remarkably uncrowded even in August.

The exposure here is considerable — wind and spray are the default conditions, and the waves are powerful enough that the beach is popular with experienced surfers but not suitable for casual swimming unless the sea is flat. Walk south along the dunes and you reach a second, smaller beach at Carrapateira. Together they form one of the most unspoiled stretches of coastline in the Algarve.
