Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Museum

Museum to Portugal's most important early modernist, housed in the monastery

Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso was born in Manhufe just outside Amarante in 1887, moved to Paris at 19, exhibited alongside Modigliani and Brancusi, and was on his way to becoming one of the great early modernists when the Spanish flu pandemic killed him in 1918. He was 30.

The museum in the cloisters of the São Gonçalo monastery holds the largest single collection of his paintings, drawings and prints — Cubist and Futurist studies, rural Portuguese scenes, near-abstract late works in vivid colour. It is the strongest argument for stopping in Amarante. A small upstairs gallery shows local 20th-century artists as well. Closed Mondays.
