Amarante is small — two hours covers the centre at a slow pace. The town's postcard view is from the south bank of the Tâmega looking across the São Gonçalo Bridge toward the church and the row of glassed-in balconies that lean out over the river. From there the São Gonçalo monastery and its art museum are a five-minute walk.
