The Battlefield of Aljubarrota lies about three kilometres south of Batalha town, in the parish of São Jorge. Here on 14 August 1385 the small Portuguese army of João I and Nuno Álvares Pereira defeated a much larger Castilian force, sealing Portuguese independence for the next two centuries and triggering the construction of the Batalha Monastery. The battlefield is preserved as an interpretation centre under the Fundação Batalha de Aljubarrota.
The visit combines an outdoor walk across the actual battle lines — well marked, with the excavated defensive pits visible — and an indoor exhibition that uses a large floor map, multimedia reconstructions, and contemporary chronicle texts to tell the story. Two hours; combines naturally with the monastery for a full day on the theme. The small Capela de São Jorge on the site is the original chapel built by the king on the spot where his vow was made.
