Old Cathedral of Bragança

The Old Cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus — the Sé Velha — is the former seat of the Diocese of Bragança-Miranda, a handsome Renaissance church in the lower city. It dates from the 16th century and contains a gilded baroque interior of some quality, with a noteworthy painted ceiling and carved choir stalls.

The diocese has since moved to a newer cathedral nearby. The old building remains open for visits and occasional services, and its relative obscurity means you will often have it to yourself. The church stands in a quiet square a short walk from the main commercial area — easy to combine with a walk through the historic town centre below the citadel.
