Beaches

Funchal's beaches are not what most people picture when they hear the word. White sand is rare on Madeira; the coastline is volcanic, so the sand is black and the shore is rocky. But the water is crystal clear and pleasantly warm, and the island has built a string of bathing complexes that make the most of what nature provided.

Lido

The most popular bathing complex in Funchal. Two seawater pools are refilled daily, and there is direct ocean access for open-water swimming. The complex also has a water slide, diving center, table tennis, and a baby care room.

Ponta Gorda

One of the newer complexes and quickly becoming a favorite. Two swimming pools and a children's pool, plus direct sea access. Sandy areas for beach sports.

Doca do Cavacas

Natural pools formed by volcanic rock, enclosed from the open sea but connected to it. Less developed than other complexes but more beautiful. Basic facilities: restaurant, bar, changing rooms.

Praia Formosa

About ten minutes from the city center. Three small sandy beaches plus a larger pebble beach. Popular in summer with a lively atmosphere including sports activities and evening events.

Barreirinha

At the end of the old town. A children's pool and direct ocean access. Gets very crowded on weekends, so visit during the week if you can.
