Getting Around

Madeira has no trains, so getting around Funchal means taxis, buses, or walking. The city is hilly but compact, and transport is reliable.

Taxi

Taxis are everywhere, painted yellow with blue stripes and a sign on top. Rates are government-regulated, but some drivers prefer to negotiate a flat rate rather than use the meter. Insist on the meter to avoid overpaying, or agree on a price before you get in. Many drivers speak English and Spanish. Hiring a taxi for a full day is also an option for exploring outside the city.

Bus

Yellow buses run frequently through the city. You will rarely wait more than five minutes. A ticket from the driver costs about 1.80 euros; pre-purchased double tickets (two rides for 1.70 euros) save money. Sightseeing buses with commentary run around the main attractions for about 10 euros.

Aerobus

A dedicated bus service between the airport and Funchal. TAP passengers ride free; others pay 5 euros.
