Museu CR7

The Museu CR7 sits on the harbourfront promenade and is exactly what it sounds like: a museum dedicated entirely to Cristiano Ronaldo. Display cases hold his four Ballon d'Or trophies, his European Championship and Champions League medals, FIFA Best awards, and a collection of shirts from across his career. Wax figures of Ronaldo in various poses stand throughout the rooms.

Whether you find football hero worship compelling or puzzling, this is a genuine piece of Madeiran cultural life. The island has a population of around 250,000 and produced the best-paid footballer in the history of the game; the pride is real and widespread. Children are enthusiastic about it regardless of their views on the man.

A story
Cristiano Ronaldo was born in the Santo António neighborhood of Funchal in 1985 and left Madeira at twelve to join Sporting Lisbon's academy. A bronze statue of him outside the museum has become one of the most photographed subjects in Funchal — celebrated, debated, and reliably surrounded by tourists at all hours.
