Rua de Santa Maria

The oldest and most photographed street in Guimarães, running between Oliveira Square and Largo do Carmo. Mentioned in 12th-century documents under this same name, it was for centuries the address of the city's wealthier families.

The street is narrow, paved in stone, and lined with tall houses with iron-railed balconies and granite door frames. Look up: many of the lintels carry coats of arms, dates, or carved religious motifs that say something about who once lived behind them.
