Guimarães packs an extraordinary amount of medieval architecture, royal history, and atmospheric streets into a centre you can walk across in twenty minutes. The castle and the ducal palace anchor the upper town; the UNESCO-listed historic centre below them is best explored on foot, square by square. Climb Monte da Penha for the view, then come back down for dinner in the old town.
