Chiado

Chiado is Lisbon's most elegant neighbourhood, a genteel wedge of culture and commerce squeezed between the nightlife of Bairro Alto and the grid of Baixa. Its literary pedigree runs deep: Fernando Pessoa's bronze statue sits outside Cafe A Brasileira, where the poet once held court, and the area remains thick with independent bookshops, including the venerable Livraria Bertrand, the world's oldest operating bookstore. The Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos anchors a theatre district that punches well above its weight. Shopping here tends toward refined rather than mass-market, with Portuguese design boutiques and ceramics shops along Rua Garrett. A devastating fire gutted parts of Chiado in 1988, but the reconstruction, led by architect Alvaro Siza Vieira, restored it beautifully.
