Parque das Nações

Parque das Nações (Park of Nations) is Lisbon's newest neighbourhood, built for the 1998 Expo on a stretch of contaminated waterfront north of the historic centre that had been an industrial wasteland. The resulting district is entirely 1990s in character — wide riverside promenades, modernist architecture, and large public spaces — but surprisingly pleasant. It sits on a wide bend of the Tagus with uninterrupted views across the river.

The main attractions are the Oceanarium (one of Europe's best aquariums), the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (a science museum), and the cable car running along the waterfront. The Oriente station at the eastern end, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is one of the finest railway stations in Europe and worth visiting in its own right. The neighbourhood is quieter than the historic centre and popular with Lisboetas for weekend walking.
