Municipal museum in a Baroque church, housing religious art and ethnographic collections

The Municipal Museum of Ponte de Lima occupies the former church and convent of the Third Order of St Francis — a Baroque complex that still feels authentically ecclesiastical. The collections span religious sculpture and painting from the medieval period through the 18th century, alongside ethnographic material from the Minho region: traditional costumes, farm tools, and objects of daily life from a rural world that has largely disappeared.

The church building itself is worth seeing for its gilded woodwork and azulejo tilework. The museum is a good place to understand what the Minho region was before tourism arrived — the vinho verde vineyards, the oxen pulling carts, the water-driven mills along the Lima's tributaries.
