Paço de Calheiros

17th-century baroque manor house operating as a guesthouse, 5 km north

One of the finest examples of a Minho solar (manor house) in the Ponte de Lima municipality, the Paço de Calheiros is a 17th-century baroque palace perched on a granite hillside about 5 km north of town. The counts of Calheiros have lived here for centuries; the current generation operate it as an upscale guesthouse, but the terraced gardens, chapel, and estate vineyards are impressive whether or not you stay.

The views over the Lima valley from the terrace are exceptional — on a clear day you can see all the way to the coast. The estate produces its own vinho verde, and if you stay, breakfast typically includes wine alongside the usual Portuguese spread.
