The town's municipal theatre sits on the main square and is named for Diogo Bernardes, the Renaissance poet born here in the 16th century who wrote some of the finest lyric verse in the Portuguese language. His O Lima — a pastoral poem in praise of the river and its valley — is still read in schools and made him the most celebrated son of this small town.
The theatre building itself dates from the late 19th century and has hosted performances and civic events ever since. Check what's on during your visit — touring productions occasionally come through, and the building is worth a look even from outside.
