Restaurante 31 de Janeiro

A long-running, family-style seafood restaurant in the streets behind Lapa Church, on the edge of the Bairro Sul fishing quarter. Tables are close together, the dining room is loud, and the menu is dominated by the daily catch — grilled sardines and sea bass in summer, hake and octopus year-round.

The pescada à poveira — hake stewed with potatoes and coriander — is the dish to try. Reservations recommended on summer evenings.
