Eating Out

Tomar's restaurant scene is modest but honest. The local speciality is roast chicken, and the churrasqueiras (grilled chicken restaurants) around town are worth seeking out — simple, cheap, and often very good. Fish from the Atlantic coast arrives fresh; bacalhau (salt cod) appears in multiple forms on every menu, as it does everywhere in Portugal.

The main square and the streets around the old town have a handful of traditional tascas serving reliable Portuguese lunches — pork, grilled fish, soup, dessert — for reasonable prices. Avoid places with laminated photo menus near the convent; they exist for tourists and the quality rarely justifies the price.

The covered market near the centre sells local produce, including the excellent regional olive oil and the wines of the Ribatejo appellation.
