Mouchão Park occupies a small island in the Rio Nabão at the centre of Tomar, reached by a footbridge from either bank and used by the town for picnics, evening walks, and general relaxation. The park is planted with plane trees and has a working watermill — an old hydraulic wheel that was once used to irrigate the fields of the town — as well as the remains of a few other industrial structures from the era when the river was more economically useful than it is today.
The watermill wheel still turns, moved by the current rather than any other power, and it remains a pleasant thing to watch from the bank. In summer the park fills with local families; in winter it is quiet and sometimes flooded. The surrounding river offers decent birdwatching, with herons and egrets regular presences along the banks, and the view back towards the convent hill from the island is one of the better ones in town.
A gentle twenty-minute walk will take you around the island and back.
