Jardim do Morro

The Jardim do Morro is a public garden on the upper level of the Gaia riverbank, directly above the port lodges and adjacent to the Monastery of Serra do Pilar. It serves principally as a lookout point — the best one in either Porto or Gaia for the panoramic view across the Douro and up into the heart of Porto's historic centre. The garden itself is modest: lawns, some shade trees, benches, and a café. What brings people here is the view, which is superb at any time of day and magnificent at sunset.

The Gaia cable car (teleférico) connects the Jardim do Morro at the top with the waterfront promenade at the bottom, running a short route above the rooftops of the lodges. The cable car is not cheap but the ride is spectacular — especially looking back at the stacked whitewashed buildings of the Ribeira across the river — and it saves the steep walk back up. If you walk down, the steps and ramps are well-signed and take about ten minutes.

The metro (line D) has a station at Jardim do Morro, making this an easy starting point for a walk that descends to the waterfront and then crosses the Ponte Dom Luís I into Porto.
