Viseu has a confident local food culture built on the produce of Beira Alta: roast kid (cabrito assado), smoked pork sausage, river trout, Serra da Estrela cheese, and a remarkable pastry tradition. Dão wine is on every table. The restaurants in the old city around Rua Augusto Hilário and the Rossio are the most reliable — look for tascas (small restaurants) with handwritten menus rather than laminated tourist menus.
