By air: Baia Mare Airport (BAY) has limited domestic connections to Bucharest. For more options, Cluj-Napoca Airport is roughly 150 km south and serves as the main gateway to northwest Romania, with connections to many European cities.
By train: Direct trains run from Bucharest (around 9–10 hours) and Cluj-Napoca (3–4 hours). The main station is about 2 km from the city centre.
By bus: Intercity coaches connect Baia Mare to Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Bucharest, and several Hungarian cities. Maxi-taxi minibuses cover the rural villages of Maramureș county more frequently than the buses but require local knowledge to navigate.
By car: From Cluj-Napoca, the DN1C/E576 takes around 2 hours. From Budapest, count on 5–6 hours via the Oradea border crossing. Having a car is strongly recommended for exploring the Maramureș villages and wooden churches — public transport to many of the most rewarding spots is infrequent or nonexistent.
