Baia Mare punches above its weight for a regional city. The medieval core holds a handful of handsome towers and churches, and two good museums cover the area's distinct folk culture and long mining history. The city is also the launch pad for the Maramureș countryside — wooden churches, hay meadows, and village markets that feel entirely unchanged — so a day or two here pays dividends before heading out into the region.
