The main square of Baia Mare's old town is a handsome, well-maintained space ringed by colourful baroque and neo-classical facades. Stephen's Tower anchors one end, several of the city's key historic buildings frame the sides, and the square functions as the social heart of the city — busy with café tables in summer, quieter and photogenic in winter light. It is a good starting point for exploring the medieval core on foot, and several of the museums are within easy walking distance.
