White Tower

Whitewashed bastion above the old town with rampart views

The Turnul Alb sits high above the west wall of the old town, reached by a steep flight of steps from Strada George Cosbuc. It was built in the 1490s as part of the chain of bastions that ringed the Saxon town and was for centuries painted white as a counterpart to the (lower-down) Black Tower on the opposite hillside.

It is not large and the interior is empty, but the climb up — about 200 steps in total — is worth it for the view over the red roofs of the old town to Mount Tampa on the other side. Most visitors combine it with a walk along the surviving stretch of the city walls below.
