Piața Unirii is one of the most impressive squares in Eastern Europe — a vast rectangle ringed by baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic facades, with St. Michael's Church and the Matthias Corvinus monument as its centrepieces. The mix of styles is the city's history written in stone: Hungarian Renaissance palaces next to Habsburg baroque, all in the same block.
The square is the centre of life in Cluj. In summer the terraces fill up, in winter the Christmas market takes over the southern end, and the old Bánffy Palace — now the Art Museum — anchors the east side. Walk a slow lap and you'll see Cluj's main monuments without going more than a hundred metres in any direction.
