Romanian National Opera

Romanian-language opera and ballet in a grand 1906 Helmer-and-Fellner theatre

The Romanian National Opera shares a sumptuous neo-baroque building with the Lucian Blaga National Theatre on Piața Avram Iancu, designed by the Viennese firm Fellmer and Helmer in 1906 — the same architects responsible for several Habsburg-era theatres across Eastern Europe. The exterior is showy; the gilded auditorium inside is showier.

The opera company has been performing here since 1919 and stages a strong repertoire of standard Italian and French works as well as Romanian compositions. Tickets are extraordinarily cheap by Western European standards, and even the best seats in the gilded auditorium go for the cost of a pizza. Worth a night out for the building alone.
