Sarmizegetusa Regia was the capital of the Dacian kingdom before the Roman conquest in 106 CE. Its ruined sanctuaries, defensive walls, and mountain setting are part of the UNESCO-listed Dacian Fortresses of the Orastie Mountains.
The site is remote enough to need planning, but it is one of the region's most important archaeological stops. Visitors come for the atmosphere of the hilltop ruins as much as for the surviving stonework.
